WROUGHT IRON GRILLE. 16TH CENTURY.

Gothic railing with frame. Wrought iron, wood. 16th century. A carved wooden frame supports the wrought iron gate, which has decorated balusters: all have a heart shape in the centre, while the axes are smooth above and spiralled below in those with the heart facing upwards, and spiralled above and smooth below in those with this shape with the point facing downwards. These heart-shaped shapes appear, for example, in the Gothic grille of the Cathedral of Pamplona or in the main chapel of the Cathedral of Zamora, or in the Monastery of Guadalupe. Thin square bars, often twisted, appear in Spanish ironwork as early as the 14th century. The “opening” of the vertical bars forming rhombuses, hearts or more complex variants can be seen in examples from the 15th century (Ávila Cathedral, etc.)
