FLEMISH BRONZE MORTAR, 17TH CENTURY

Antiques -
Reference: ZF1258

Flemish mortar. Bronze. XVII century. Features brand. Mortar with a circular base with a mouth that extends outward from the two upper stripes and a body with slight entasis and a relief decoration of figurative motifs. In addition to a series of moldings in its external area, you can see two male protomes (heads with mustaches and non-human features) and a band with different elements in the lower part (roles, leaves, quadruped monsters). Note, also, a kind of circular “seal” (or so it seems), with letters (HLB / RA/TE) around a banner flanked by plant elements and placed on three oval objects. Compare the present example with those by P. van den Ghein from the Royal Carillon School “Jef Denyn” Museum in Mechelen (despite being earlier), a 17th century example from the Pharmacy Museum in Berlin (Germany), another in the Museum of the Pharmacy of the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain), etc. Weight: 4.6kg.
