Cameo, Apollo and Marsyas. Glass. Possibly Italy, 19th century. Cameo or intaglio depicting the bound satyr Marsyas, Apollo standing and holding a lyre, and Olympus kneeling. Compare this piece with the so-called Seal of Nero, an intaglio belonging to Lorenzo de' Medici (Farnese Collection) that is in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, Italy. Such pieces were produced in large numbers as they were highly prized as souvenirs by Grand Tour travellers, and several were often collected together to form collections.
