Cameo or intaglio, Cupid guiding lions. Glass. Possibly, Italy, 19th century. In the foreground, we can see a naked, winged child figure, Cupid (or Eros, god of love), leading two lions, who pull a chariot (note the wheel). These scenes were common in divine processions, especially in the case of Cibeles or Mars. These types of pieces were created in significant numbers as they were highly appreciated as souvenirs by travellers on the Grand Tour, and several were often brought together to make collections.
