Cameo or intaglio, Cupid leading lions. Glass. Possibly Italy, 19th century. In the foreground, we can see a naked, winged child figure, Cupid (or Eros, god of love), leading two lions, who are pulling a chariot (note the wheel). These scenes were common in divine processions, especially in the case of Cybele or Mars. These types of pieces were created in large numbers as they were highly appreciated as souvenirs by travellers on the Grand Tour, and several were often collected to form collections.
