Garnish, table clock and candlesticks. Bronze, marble. Following CLODION models. France, 19th century. Set consisting of a table clock with Paris mechanism and two two-light candelabras made of white marble and gilded and blued bronze. The clock has a raised stone base with legs and enhanced with a chain of pearls and the dial (with Arabic numerals and coloured garlands; Arabic numerals every fifteen for the minutes) contained in an architectural structure accompanied by a torch, a vase (part marble and part bronze) and an arch; on it rests a half-naked child figure hugging a rooster. The candelabras, with a circular base with legs and pearls, each have a figure (a child with a garland of flowers on its head and a faun) holding with its arms two branches that end in the candlesticks' lighters. The two candelabras, depicting a satyr and Bacchus or bacchante, are inspired by pieces created by Claude Michel (1738-Paris, 1814; also called Clodion), a French sculptor renowned for his work, including the Grand Prix for Sculpture from the Academie Royale in 1759 and the Prix de Rome in 1762. He was highly appreciated for his work. The satyr in this pair closely follows the master's models (compare Satyr Running with an Owl, made between 1770 and 1780, Cleveland Museum of Art). There are several known examples of candelabras with figures like this pair (with variations in the lights and bases). The Cupid on the table clock is also inspired by Clodion's reliefs and sculptures, but what is striking about this fitting is that, according to the preserved games, it is not usual to combine the candlesticks with these figures with the clock in the same set. Total weight: 27 kg.
