Bronze theodolite. Non-functional decorative use. The theodolite is a universal mechanical-optical measuring instrument used to measure vertical and, above all, horizontal angles, in which field it has a high level of precision. With other auxiliary tools it can measure distances and differences in level. It is portable and hand-held; it is made for topographic and engineering purposes, especially in triangulations. With the help of a staff and by means of tachymetry, it can measure distances. A more modern and sophisticated equipment is the electronic theodolite, and another more sophisticated instrument is another type of theodolite better known as a total station. Basically, the current theodolite is a telescope mounted on a tripod and with two graduated circles, one vertical and one horizontal, with which angles are measured with the help of lenses.
