OIL ON WOOD, SAINT TERESA OF ÁVILA.
Decorative Antiques -
Reference: Z6373
Oil on panel, Saint Teresa. 17th century Requires cleaning and restoration. Saint Teresa is shown dressed in the habit of the order she founded, the Discalced Carmelites, in a luxurious interior, next to a table with a book (alluding to her work as a writer) and looking up, receiving divine inspiration. The flaming heart that appears in her hand refers to the episode of her Transverberation. The crown worn by the angel alludes to an apparition that occurred in 1563 and is very common in works related to Carmelite monasteries and churches: Christ placed a crown on her and thanked her for what she had done for his Mother. Saint Teresa of Avila was beatified in 1614, and sanctified by Gregory XV in 1622, from which time onwards reproductions of her proliferated both in buildings and works related to the Carmelites and in many others.
