Virgin with Child. Carved and polychrome wood. Spanish school, 19th century. It has faults. Carving made of polychrome wood that shows the Virgin Mary, standing and with a spherical object in her right hand, with the Child Jesus in her left arm, which holds an open book. On the back, there is a hole to lighten the weight of the sculpture and a metal ring that allows the work to be attached to a wall or altar. Mary appears dressed in a long tunic and an overshirt, her hair partially covered by a veil and a small crown on her head. Jesus presents a polychrome robe in gold tone. Iconographically, these types of works were common during the Gothic period in Europe, a time when Christian theology began to highlight the role of the Virgin not only as a vehicle of Salvation, but also as mother of Christ. Compare, for example, with the 13th century carving in the Church of San Juan de la Cruz del Carmen Descalzo in Alba de Tormes (Salamanca), or the one from Troncedo (Huesca) found in the Diocesan Museum of Barbastro, or the one known as the Virgin of Sancho Albarca de Tauste dated to the 14th century. In the 19th century, historicisms became popular throughout Europe, recovering aesthetics from the past of different countries to create works inspired by Gothic, Romanesque, etc. Thus, this type of images returned during what is known as Neo-Gothic, inspired by outstanding medieval carvings.
