Cameo or intaglio, Urania. Glass. Possibly Italy, 19th century. The half-naked female figure seated and holding a sphere is often associated with the Muse of Astronomy and Astrology, Urania. Compare the piece with the intaglio by Giovanni Pilcher, which is also considered to represent this muse, made before 1791 and which It is kept in the British Museum in London. Such pieces were created in large numbers as they were highly prized as souvenirs by travellers on the Grand Tour, and several were often collected to form collections.
