Cameo or intaglio, Hercules against the Nemean lion. Glass. Possibly Italy, 19th century. The figurative representation of a muscular man wrestling with a lion is common in this type of neoclassical intaglio. It is considered to have been influenced by works by Pichler and Calandrelli, who in turn were inspired by an early piece by Nicolo. Poniatowski (etching by Thomas Worlidge, 1757, London British Museum, Dep. Prints and Drawings no. 1859.0709.889) made an engraving with this or a similar image. Such pieces were produced in large numbers as they were highly prized as souvenirs by Grand Tour travellers, and several were often collected together to form collections.
