Bowl, Talavera, late 17th – early 18th century. Glazed ceramic. Ceramic bowl decorated with high-temperature glazes on an opaque white tin slip. The polychromy is based on typical Talavera colours: cobalt blue, copper green, manganese black, antimony yellow and iron ochres, browns and oranges. These glazes were applied to the raw slip, so the piece was fired only twice: once for the paste and once for the slip and glazes. In addition, the colours were protected with a varnish, which was also fired in this second firing. The pieces were placed in the kiln in blankets or boxes, so that the colours would not burn (they are fired at a very high temperature, 900º). In general, those from Talavera will be well fired, without significant defects. The peak of this ceramic manufacture will take place between the 16th century and the mid-18th century, when the French taste was introduced to Spain, and the clientele began to prefer pieces from Alcora. However, Talavera would experience a new Golden Age at the end of the 19th century, with historicism. This piece features a typical Talavera decoration, which would be widely imitated in other centres throughout the Modern Age: a rampant animal in the centre, on a schematic ground plane, flanked by two large plant elements. The decoration is completed with synthesised plant elements and bands of concentric lines, inside and out.

San Antonio leg table; Spain, 17th century. Walnut wood. The San Antonio leg table (serrated leg, simple, square section) was the most common typology for this type of furniture in Spain from the 16th to the 18th centuries, given its functionality and simplicity, since in rich houses the tables were not displayed, but were dressed with sumptuous fabrics that hid their structure.

Pair of 19th century miniatures. “Portrait of a Lady” and “Portrait of a Gentleman”. With illegible signature. Carved and gilded wooden frames. Pair of miniature portraits, representing a lady and a gentleman from the 19th century, surrounded by magnificent carved and gilded wooden frames, of Baroque inspiration, based on curled acanthus leaves. Miniature painting, especially portraits, developed in Europe from the 16th century onwards. These were mainly paintings fitted into objects such as medallions, table clocks or small boxes. They were produced using a wide variety of techniques, such as oil on copper, tin or ivory, washes on parchment or cardboard and, from the 18th century, watercolours on ivory. This delicate art was lost from the second half of the 19th century, in parallel with the development of photography.

Short barrel. Iron. 19th-20th century. A short iron cannon with two pieces on the sides for better attachment to the support and a series of rings along its outer surface. Due to its size and these decorative elements, it is reminiscent of ancient artillery such as bombards. These types of pieces were made in the 19th and 20th centuries, inspired by antique examples, primarily for decorative purposes and usually intended for interiors decorated in the Neo-Medieval style, very fashionable in Spain in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Medieval cannons, enormous firearms for firing a heavy projectile over great distances, are the archetype of modern artillery. Possibly the first to be used in Europe appeared in Muslim and Christian Spain. The bombard, currently considered the oldest known portable firearm in the West, was a precursor to the cannon.

Figures with a soldier. Oil on canvas. 20th century. In this oil painting, a series of humble figures of all ages are placed to the right, and a soldier on horseback with his back to the viewer (a detail that, together with his posture, prevents any possibility of a heroic sense in the work); in the background, ruins with rocks occupy most of the canvas, leaving an opening to the horizon and a light of dawn to the left. Both in the types and in the composition and the ruins, the influence of ancient Flemish models in the painting is clear.
