Cameo or intaglio, dancer. Glass. Possibly Italy, 19th century. The female figure, in a dancing attitude and holding a vessel, can be identified with a dancing Maenad. These divine female beings often appeared in the procession of the god Bacchus (Dionysus), differing from the Bacchantes or Bassarides in that the latter were mortal. This type of piece was created in significant numbers as they were highly appreciated as souvenirs by travellers on the Grand Tour, and several were often collected to form collections.
